@45n5 Most of the dns servers (tinydns, powerdns, bind) does’t support thins like that. Only what you can do is setup round robbin records for some host records and let manipulate an extarnal monitoring software your dns records if a host is down. But in this case you get problems with the ttl of a record, your visitors wil for a time redirect to the broken ip adress until the local caching nameserver wil reset the hostdata and redirect the client to the correct ip adresses.

@barakoglu27 lookup “dns failover”. the dns server does exactly that, checks the host is up, if not it switches the dns to another host.

@45n5 only a load balancing sytem can detect that a host is down and can switch to another host. A dns server can’t do this.

@barakoglu27 yes it can, the dns server pings the server every few seconds to see if it’s up, if it is it does nothing, if it’s down then it sends visitors to another one of your hosts
