Just wanted to discuss the issue of removing post date from WordPress blogs. Google seems to have a problem with older pages that don’t update that regularly, and one time factor give away is the post date that automatically timestamps your blog posts. In some circles webmasters suggest removing the post date to avoid the ‘non-updated content’ penalty thing. To be honest I’m not sure that will be of any use in the face of the ‘Panda‘ storm that rages through the Internet right now, but you may wish to give it a go anyway…

Remove Post Date

After a bit of research I came across lots of pages explaining ways to remove the date by going into pages and deleting the class out. But after finding this to be a pain I discovered that by removing one piece of code in the function.php file, the post dates are removed from all posts, categories etc.

This worked for the twentyten theme, but I suppose it’ll work for most if not all WP themes.

I just commented out a bit of code you can see between the comments /* and */ below. I did add in the ‘,’ before the closing */ as not putting it in would cause and error.

I’m not a programmer and I’m sure there are cleaner ways to do this but this was easy enough for me.

Just one more thing on regarding older non-updated pages; IMO it seems silly to penalize these pages with an automatic algorithm, as old information can still be valid after many years.
